What you write in it is your own bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzness…
This was my first attempt at using embossed leather to decorate a book. I started with a sketch of the design, a bee surrounded by a honeycomb pattern, and marked it onto a piece of vegetable-tanned leather.
Once the honeycomb pattern and details were embossed on the bee, the leather was dyed dark brown and the design cut out. The golden, swirling texture behind the leather is provided by a reflective textured acetate sheet with a light coloured backing.
A dark bronze metallic paint was used to fill in the centre of each honeycomb, and the bee was painted with coloured acrylics. A layer of clear acrylic sealant was then applied to the leather.
Handmade endpapers with a natural texture and a neutral colour give the book an organic look. Yellow silk-stitched black endbands and brass bee charms on the tie-closures complete the bee theme.
